Danny Daniels

Danny cut his teeth in the music industry as the key songwriter for John Wimber, the man who put the Righteous Brothers on the map - prior to his emergence as a bona fide blue-eyed “blues brother”.

John Wimber wrote, produced and performed with Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield during their formative years until he started getting involved with Gospel and Christian music in the back half of the 70’s. Danny Daniels wrote a majority of the big songs for Wimber’s Mercy Records/Vineyard Music Group into the 90’s. Danny’s songs have become classics throughout that genre.

In 1993, feeling the call back to his deep roots in American music - blues, jazz, folk, country and rock & roll, Danny recorded Another Shade of Blue for Wimber’s label with moderate success. Regardless, Another Shade of Blue got Danny back out on the road as a touring act., performing nearly 200 dates a year, in roadhouses, on coffee house stages, churches and any other venue he could find.

Building an audience one person at time, Danny’s faithful following has supported him ardently into the 2000’s. An indie artist with strong CD sales and powerful live performances, Daniels has steadily grown into a Modern Blues powerhouse. One spin of his new CD, Leavin’ On the Special leaves no doubt!

Produced by Randy Rigby, guitarist/producer for Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield, Poco), Bill Medley (Righteous Brothers) and many others, "Leavin’ On the Special" carries on in the tradition of artists such as John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and Robin Ford. Danny’s vocals are like aged brandy with his soulful harp playing strongly reminiscent of the late Paul Butterfield.

As a songwriter, Daniels is steeped in Americana; on this, his 5th solo recording, one can hear the spirit of the Mississippi Delta, the south side of Chicago, Beale Street in its heyday, and the heart of the night down in New Orleans.

Says Daniels of his song writing style, “The music that I try to write and perform is music you hear in the air and in the streets; blues, soul, country, rock, spiritual music, crowds, street sounds and field sounds, the sound of people and silence!”

Danny is currently on tour promoting the new CD, performing on stages across America. Catch one of his shows, pick up Leavin’ On the Special and visit him at his web site danny-daniels.com

Some More Info

I was born in North Carolina, home of the "Piedmont Blues", sort of a sub-genre of the larger blues expression. Then, as a toddler, I moved to the Kansas City, MO area, my mother's home of origin. I was privileged to have a friend in my early teens up to about 18 years of age who was from the only black family on our end of town. He always had 45 rpm records that were not being played on the radio. Big Mama Thornton, Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, and on an on. Those voices and sounds completely knocked me out as a kid, and caused me to be a seeker of that stuff for the rest of my life. Southern California was not my home until 1967, when I got out of the Marines, although the evangelical and worship music from Maranatha and Mercy/Vineyard, to which I was fortunate to be able to contribute, has caused most folks to look to So Cal in reference to my stuff. The real roots are way further East and South, and grew in a whole lot darker earth.
